Tūhura Exhibition Success!
The whare pukapuka was buzzing on Wednesday night as we held our Grand opening to our Building from Scratch Tūhura Exhibition.
One of our goals from our Strategic Plan is:
Curriculum/ Rakatirataka
Ākoka will experience a rich, broad curriculum that is engaging, motivating, fosters creativity, innovation and a lifelong passion for learning.
I think you it is safe to say that our tamariki engineers definitely showcased creativity and innovation with their cardboard games, drawing upon their knowledge of simple machines!
Inspired by Caine's arcade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U the tamariki designed and created their cardboard arcades with a buddy/buddies, reflecting the real world where often there are teams of people working on projects. Design briefs included:
-
A clear purpose
-
An intended user
-
A labelled sketch
-
At least two simple machines
-
Physics concepts
-
Realistic recycled resources
-
A scoring system
-
Game instructions
-
A logical construction order
The challenge of working with cardboard and other recycled materials has been fun and tricky at times. One goal was to use less hot glue and draw on knowledge of joining and attaching cardboard instead. With trial and error and perseverance the tamariki came up with some awesome games for everyone to play.
To our Tamariki-Thank you for your amazing creativity, innovation, thinking, teamwork and perseverance! We would like to also thank our amazing kaiako and kaimahi for all their fantastic teaching and inspiration. Finally to all our visitors and supporters, thank you for coming and supporting our learning!
