Adopt a drain
We have been working with Janice Huang and colleagues, an Otago Regional Council Catchment Advisor-Environmental Implementation as part of our Tūhura learning on Scratching Beneath The Surface.
We had our last session a couple of weeks ago, where Therese Sharma told us the story of our school stream and what it looked like before the water became healthy. We also had Chris Homer, a local and ex teacher from Bayfield High School, who came to speak to us about a stream he looks after near his house in Macandrew Bay.
In this last session we also got to 'adopt a drain' around our kura to be kaitiaki of after learning about ways to keep our ocean clean and healthy. We held a little ceremony by drilling a metal fish plaque next to the selected drain. The selected drain is just outside the library near the playground. You will see the metal fish and on it is a QR code to find out more information about how to care for our adopted drain. Go and check it out!
