We have been very lucky to have started the year with two very exciting art projects
Martin Poppelwell and Simon Kaan collaborated on a beautiful mural on a wall in our school playground in February.
The mural is entitled ‘Study for a Southern Rata’ and was inspired by a special rata down at the Macandrew Bay Beach area. Martin and Simon were our artists in residence for a week and we loved talking to them and watching them at work. Our students had an opportunity to add their ideas to the mural and each night Simon and Martin would look through their drawings and gather up images. it was exciting to see some of the children’s ideas and motifs appearing in the mural and adding to the fantastic artwork created by our resident artists. At the end of the week we had a ‘Handing Over’ Ceremony where we thanked Martin and Simon. We are going to enjoy this mural for years to come!
We would like to thank Resene and the DCC ‘Keep Dunedin Beautiful’ group for their practical help with this project.

“Spot the Bay” Painting project
Local artists and Art Educators , Kerry Mackay and Pamela Brown, have just completed another exciting art project with our students. They spent two mornings with each class working on a fantastic painting project. Each child had their own spot to paint where they could paint colours, patterns, shapes and motifs that they see in the world around them living in Macandrew Bay.
We also learned lots about the work of the famous artist Yayoi Kusama and the way spots appear in her work. We are going to polurethene these artworks and will then make into installations where we hang them in colourful groups inside our school environment. Some may hang from trees, appear in areas of our playground or be seen in our internal as well as external spaces.
Kerry and Pamela were lots of fun to work with and we had a great time working on our paintings with them.
